Urinary Incontinence in Older Adults
Urinary incontinence refers to a person who experiencing leaks of urine that is accidental or uncontrollable. While it can happen to anyone, urinary incontinence, also known as an overactive bladder, becomes more common as people age, especially women. Bladder control issues can be embarrassing and be the cause of people avoiding their normal activities, however it can be stopped or controlled and we are here to help!
The severity ranges from occasionally leaking urine while straining, coughing, or sneezing to having a frequent urge to urinate that occurs suddenly. Some people may only experience occasional and minor leaks of urine, while others may lose small to moderate amounts of urine frequently.
Located in the lower abdomen, the bladder is a hollow organ that is part of the urinary system, which also includes the kidneys, ureters, and urethra. During urination, muscles in the bladder tighten to move urine into the tube-shaped urethra. At the same time, the muscles around the urethra relax and let the urine pass out of the body. When the muscles in and around the bladder weaken or do not carry out their functions accordingly, urine can leak, resulting in urinary incontinence.
Incontinence can happen for many reasons, including urinary tract infections, vaginal infections or irritation, or constipation. Some medications can cause bladder control problems that last a brief time. When incontinence lasts longer, it may be due to:
- Weak bladder or pelvic floor muscles
- Overactive bladder muscles
- Damage to nerves that control the bladder from diseases such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, or Parkinson’s disease
- Diseases such as arthritis that may make it difficult to get to the bathroom in time
- Pelvic organs prolapse is when pelvic organs (such as the bladder, rectum, or uterus) shift out of their normal place into the vagina or anus. When pelvic organs are out of place, the bladder and urethra are not able to work normally, which may cause urine to leak

Vaginal Corrective Treatments
Estrogen deficiency leads to a variety of physical changes in the vulva, vagina, and lower urinary tract. These can include vaginal dryness, burning, irritation, lack of lubrication, painful intercourse, as well as urinary symptoms of urgency, painful urination, and urinary tract infections. Vaginal discomfort and urinary incontinence can also occur in pre-menopause and after childbirth.
These symptoms are chronic in nature and may worsen with time jeopardizing sexual function and the quality of life. There are some existing estrogen treatments that may be effective to treat vaginal changes. However, the data on its safety, particularly in women with a personal history of estrogen-dependent tumors, is lacking.
Laser rejuvenation has been shown to be effective and safe in treating the troublesome vaginal and urinary conditions of menopause, increasing sexual function, and improving the quality of life.
Surgical Vs. Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Lasers and injectables aren’t only for the facial area. As the demand for and interest in vaginal rejuvenation has increased in recent years, so have the number of treatment options available. Procedures are available that use radiofrequency energy, lasers, or fillers to tighten, tone, or otherwise rejuvenate the female genital area
Usually, during treatment with radiofrequency or laser energy, a small wand is placed into the vagina. The energy produced by the wand helps to encourage the production of collagen, which in turn helps to tighten up the walls of the vaginal canal.
In addition to tightening the vaginal canal, treatment with radiofrequency or laser energy might also help to reduce stress incontinence and might improve vaginal dryness. Both non-surgical treatment options can help to improve the tone and size of the labia majora.
Another non-surgical option for vaginal rejuvenation involves the use of fillers to help enhance sexual satisfaction or orgasm.
What Happens During Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation?
There are several different types of surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures and each one focuses on a different area of the genitalia, either inside or outside of the body. Labiaplasty removes excess skin from the area around the opening of the vagina. Vaginoplasty aims to tighten the vaginal canal.
During labiaplasty, a plastic surgeon will make incisions in the labia, removing excess skin. Often, women decide to have labiaplasty because the inner lips, or labia minora, hang down below the outer lips, or labia majora. The labia minora can become stretched out as a result of vaginal delivery or aging. Some women are born with longer than average labia minora, which can cause discomfort. Reducing the size of the labia minora can not only make a woman more comfortable but can also increase her confidence.
During vaginoplasty, a plastic surgeon makes an incision in the wall of the vagina, removing a part of the wall. The inner vaginal muscles will also be tightened, helping to reduce the size of the canal. As with the labia minora, the vagina can become stretched out because of vaginal delivery, hormone fluctuations, or aging.
While surgical vaginal rejuvenation offers many cosmetic benefits, it can also have functional benefits, too. Some women see an improvement in urinary incontinence following vaginoplasty as well as an improvement in sexual function and enjoyment.
The recovery period following a surgical vaginal rejuvenation is longer than a non-surgical option, which tends to make more patients opt towards the non-surgical option.

How Much Does IntimaLase Cost?
The price of one treatment session of IntimaLase is typically approximately $1000. Most patients require two to three sessions spaced about 3-4 weeks apart. Patients may require maintenance treatment sessions once a year.
Does IntimaLase Hurt?
IntimaLase is not painful! At most, patients may feel a small amount of mild heat towards the end of the treatment, which is generally very well tolerated by the body.
The Plus90 Vaginal Tightening Treatment at Skin Vitality
PLUS90® is a safe and effective, non-surgical feminine energy-based treatment to target internal and external vaginal issues. Treatments use radiofrequency (RF) energy to gently heat tissue and rejuvenate collagen with minimal discomfort and downtime.
The majority of patients typically require 2-3 PLUS90 treatments spaced out approximately 3-4 weeks apart. Each treatment session of PLUS90 typically takes between 15 to 20 minutes. While many of our patients observe visible results after just 1 session, they will continue to see improved results over the course of their treatments and may decide to come back yearly for a touch up appointment. Preparation for the first appointment is minimal and there is no recovery time needed for each treatment session, meaning you can get back to normal everyday activities right away!

How Does PLUS90 Work?
This non-surgical treatment works by utilizing an RF light to stimulate your body’s own collagen and regenerative potential. A numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area or maximized comfort during the session. Using the two handpieces – one to cause tightening and shrinkage of the internal muscles and the labia, the other to improve wrinkles and skin tone, these devices will omit a pulsing warm light around in the treatment zone. Patients often have little to no discomfort during this process, before and after their appointment.
The results of PLUS90 treatments are long lasting. However, as your body ages over time, some patients may find it beneficial to come back every year or so in order to retain optimal results.
To achieve the best results, it is recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse for the 24 hours prior to your appointment. Additionally, we ask that patients refrain from the use of NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen or Advil 3 days prior to their PLUS90 appointment.
PLUS90 is a well-loved treatment as there are no post-op precautions that are necessary. Patients can immediately return to their normal everyday activities; however, it is recommended that patients should abstain from sexual intercourse for 1-2 weeks following the treatment. It is also recommended to abstain from heavy lifting and prolonged periods of exercise for up to 14 days.
