WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?
Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, is a naturally occurring substance within the human body. It can often be found throughout a person’s skin, cartilage, muscles and tendons. For this reason, it has long been of interest to cosmetic medical doctors. It is also common and appropriate for use in skincare products, providing hydration to the skin.
When we are young, the hyaluronic acid levels in our skin are relatively high, which promotes that suppleness and elasticity to our skin. However, as we age our body begins to produce less and less amount of hyaluronic acid. This can be caused by various factors including exposure to the damaging elements of the environment, particularly UV rays from the sun.

WHAT IS Restylane?
Restylane is an FDA approved, nonsurgical, non invasive cosmetic treatment. Restylane is a family of injectable hyaluronic acid fillers used to provide correction for wrinkles, scars, under eye hallows, tear troughs, and aging hands. It is also used for lip augmentation and lifting of the cheek area.
Restylane’s line has a wide range of products, which contain pain reducing lidocaine. Each product has a specific texture, density, and injection depth (utilizing the brand’s proprietary XpresHAn technology), which is used to target certain areas and/or purposes. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the body and works by holding in water at the injection site and acting as a cushioning agent which adds temporary volume, hydration, and a smoother appearance to the skin.
RESTYLANE PRODUCT LINE
- Restylane – This classic formula is used for the correction of wrinkles, and plumps lips. It’s also popular for the tear trough region or the undereye hollows.
- Restylane Silk – This is the finest form and is used for the correction of fine lines around your mouth and fills under-eye hollows. It also adds subtle volume for lip enhancement.

Difference Between Juvéderm and Restylane?
Juvéderm and Restylane are very similar injectable dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid to achieve a smooth, plump, lifted, and youthful appearance. Both treatments are nonsurgical, require no downtime and are virtually pain free. There are, however, a few key differences between Juvéderm and Restylane such as;
- Texture – Restylane has a granular and more cohesive texture; the cohesive nature of Restylane allows the filler to stay in the place which makes it ideal for adding volume in specific sunken facial areas. Restylane is also moldable, which allows the injector to better create shapes and contours. Juvéderm has a smoother texture; the smoothness of Juvéderm makes it better at addressing finer lines and wrinkles in tight facial areas.
- Treatment Areas – Restylane is particularly effective in treating the lips, cheeks, and area around the nose, it can also be used to for hand rejuvenation (by adding volume to the back of the hands). Juvéderm can be used to address numerous areas of the face including the eyes, cheeks, and mouth.
- Results – Restylane results can take a day or so to take full effect and Juvéderm results are apparent immediately. However, keep in mind, both have the ability to provide natural, dramatic results, with the correction of lines and wrinkles while boosting volume to make the skin firmer and plumper in appearance.

It is important to know that there are various factors that can influence the longevity of the filler, including; where the filler is on your face, how much is injected, or the speed in which your body metabolizes the filler material. Most people who want touch-up treatments will have them every 6-12 months.
