What Exactly Is a Lip Flip?
A lip flip is a quick, non-surgical treatment that softens the muscles around the upper lip so the lip gently rolls outward. When that subtle “flip” happens, more of the pink part of the lip becomes visible — which gives the appearance of a fuller, slightly more defined upper lip without adding volume.
The appointment is brief (about 10–20 minutes). A small amount of neuromodulator is placed at key points along the upper lip — typically the Cupid’s bow and the outer corners. As the muscle relaxes over the next several days, the lip begins to lift and reveal a bit more shape.
Results usually last up to three months.
Who’s a Good Fit for This Treatment?
People often consider a lip flip if they:
- Want a little more definition in the upper lip without committing to dermal fillers
- Feel like their top lip disappears or tucks inward when they smile
- Prefer a subtle enhancement rather than added volume
- Want to soften a “gummy” smile for a more balanced look
Lip Flip vs. Dermal Filler — What’s the Difference?
Both treatments can make the lips look fuller, but the way they achieve that effect is totally different.
Lip Flip:
- Relies on muscle relaxation
- Gives the illusion of more lip by rolling the lip outward
- Doesn’t add physical volume
- Offers a soft, natural-looking enhancement
Dermal Filler:
- Adds real structure and volume using hyaluronic acid
- Can create noticeable fullness, shape, and lift
- Lasts longer than a lip flip
- More customizable in terms of sculpting
If you’re unsure which option fits your goals, seeing before-and-after photos and speaking with your provider makes the decision much easier.
What the Treatment Experience Is Like
Before Your Appointment
For a few days beforehand, it’s best to avoid Alcohol and Blood thinners (like aspirin, if medically safe to stop). These increase the chance of bruising.
During the Appointment
- The treatment takes about 10 minutes
- Most people don’t need numbing — the injections are quick and very tolerable
- A few small points along the upper lip are treated
After Your Appointment
For the best outcome:
- Avoid smoking for the first couple of days
- Don’t rub or massage the area
- Try to sleep on your back if possible so you’re not pressing on your lips
When Will You See Results?
You’ll start to notice changes within a few days as the muscle begins to relax.
The full effect typically settles in between 10–14 days.
