Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections to Treat Hair Loss: How Does PRP Work?

Rogaine, supplements, diets, doctors, dermatologists; does this sound familiar? Thinning hair can be a gruelling process that takes a toll on your emotions. Luckily there is a hair loss treatment that has been growing in popularity due to its widespread success with hair regrowth. This treatment is called Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections, otherwise known as PRP Hair Restoration. PRP is a substance drawn from your blood and injected into your scalp that can purportedly help heal bodily tissues, including follicles from which your hairs grow.

How Does PRP Work?

PRP Hair Restoration is a three-step medical treatment for hair loss in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. PRP is extracted from your blood using a centrifuge-like mechanism that can separate the substance from your blood and increase the concentration of specific proteins that promote healing. The blood tube is removed from the medical centrifuge for plasma lifting. This treatment is great for women’s hair loss and men’s hair loss. Whether you are suffering from postpartum hair loss, alopecia or any other causes of hair loss, booking a free consultation will determine if you are eligible to start your hair growth journey.

Some Research Behind PRP

A 2019 study compared two groups of people using different hair treatments for 6 months. One group of 20 used Rogaine (minoxidil), and the other group of 20 who were receiving PRP injections. 30 subjects finished the study and results showed that PRP performed much better for hair loss than Rogaine. Research also suggests that PRP injections can help treat male pattern baldness, otherwise known as androgenic alopecia. Some in the medical community think that PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft.

Are PRP Injections Painful?

It is common to experience mild pain near the injection site and scalp tenderness post treatment. You may feel some pain or discomfort at first, since we are causing swelling in the scalp area. The swelling is needed for the blood cells to start helping you heal for the long term.

Is PRP Hair Restoration a Permanent Solution?

The first round of treatments takes a few visits to see initial results, but after the results start to appear, you may need to go for a touch-up at least once a year in order to maintain the new hair regrowth. PRP is one of the safest/most sustainable solutions for hair loss because it involves injecting your own blood into your scalp, you aren’t at risk for getting a communicable disease. There are still side effects, as there is with any treatment, which should be discussed with a member of our medical team prior to treatment. As much as there are temporary solutions, it is hard to find haircuts for thick hair. Once the thinning process has started, it is better to address the problem as soon as possible.
