About the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Facial

Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP®, is mostly commonly known as the ‘Vampire Facial’, an all-natural treatment that gives you beautiful, glowing skin without any medications, chemicals or surgery. PRP® has become one of the most popular skin rejuvenating treatments in the world. The PRP® Facial is Health Canada approved; it is a safe, quick and effective way to boost your collagen production for smoother, firmer skin. The PRP treatment is derived from your own body (or blood) so there is virtually no chance of an adverse reaction. The concentration of platelets, 5 – 10x times the amount circulating the body, is administered with micro-abrasions to regenerate and repair damaged tissues and stimulate circulation.

Where can PRP be used?

Growth factors are released by platelets, and these function to regulate healing. When an area is targeted with PRP®, the affected cells start to repair any damaged tissue and regenerate new, healthy tissue.

This treatment was originally used to repair of soft tissue and joints. Although this practice is still very popular, the cosmetic application of PRP® has been taking over, due to the amount of successful results. The PRP® Facial treatment applies to the face area, although Skin Vitality also offers another application of the treatment: PRP® Hair Restoration.

If you are interested in the application of PRP® for hair growth, please visit our PRP® Hair Restoration page to learn more. PRP® Hair Restoration uses the same PRP® process to target androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as female or male pattern baldness.

How Does PRP Facial Rejuvenation Work?

The PRP®, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, treatment has been used since the 1970s for the repair of soft tissue and joints. As the news of its effectiveness grew, experts started to apply the treatment for aesthetic medicine.

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy involves a high concentration of platelets being injected into the facial area. It has around 1,000,000 platelets per microlitre (μL), or at least twice the platelets in a native concentration of blood.

To create PRP®, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient using a proprietary tube. This gets put into centrifugation (spinning), so that the red cells and granulocytes are separated from the plasma. The PRP® treatment uses your own blood. The platelet concentrate and plasma that remains are then collected into a syringe, which is then used to treat the patent.

Then, the nurse will provide you with some numbing cream before the PRP® injections. Once you are numb, a needle is used to inject your plasma into the area of your body being treated.

We recommend Platelet Rich Plasma therapy to patients who are not ideal candidates for dermal fillers due to allergies or other sensitivities. When used for aesthetic purposes, Platelet Rich Plasma stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which works to tighten and tone the skin and improves the overall tone and texture of the skin.

FAQ's About PRP®

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a non-surgical procedure that can be used to treat acne scars, surgical scars, hyperpigmentation issues, uneven and dull skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles. It is a facial that essentially uses your own blood to help promote the healthy activity of your skin cells. The PRP is derived from the serum portion of the blood, which contains platelets. The platelets contain high levels of growth factors, which, when applied to the skin, will stimulate cell turnover.

The average cost for a PRP facial is between $1,100 and $1,400 with most people spending about $1,300.

The increased blood flow you’ve brought to the area will continue for months, if not years. Moreover, you will have jumpstarted your body’s production of collagen and elastin, and once those processes get going, they tend to self-perpetuate.

If you had a few vampire facelift treatments in a row – typically clients get two or three, a month apart or so – then your results will be even better and longer-lasting.

There’s slight discomfort for a few minutes during and after the procedure, but nothing significant. A local numbing agent ensures that the process is painless.

A syringe of blood will be drawn, usually from your arm, while your face is numbing. The blood is then put into a centrifuge, which separates the PRP from other components of the blood. You’ll then receive microneedling or microdermabrasion just before your PRPs are slathered across your face. The PRP solution is then massaged into the treatment area. The microneedling treatment creates small controlled micropunctures in the skin, allowing for penetration of the PRP.

On average, it takes about 2 – 3 weeks after a PRP facial for patients to see visible improvements in skin texture.  Maximum collagen regeneration occurs around 3 months after the initial treatment. The results are typically maintained for 18-24 months. Maintaining the results usually requires 1-2 yearly touch-up treatments. However, this depends largely on an individual patient’s skin condition and the severity of their issue.

Once the procedure is finished, your doctor may apply a serum or balm to help soothe any redness and irritation. You may also have the option to put on makeup to camouflage any temporary side effects.

Unlike a surgical procedure, PRP Facials aren’t one and done. While the results are long lasting, they aren’t permanent and the procedure may need to be repeated again. Results last 1 to 2 years.
