Ear Rejuvenation & Lobe Lift:
A Look at How Ears Age
We don’t often think about our ears when we think about getting older. Nonetheless, they are one of the most noticeable features of our face and, when they begin to lose their youthful look, so, too, does the rest of us begin to shown an overall appearance of aging.
Here’s a look at how ears age, from sagging to wrinkling. Knowing this will help you understand the benefits of a Toronto Lobe Lift.
How Do Ears Begin to Sag?
Ears sag with age, just like other skin on our face and body, because of the breakdown of specialized fibres known as collagen and elastin. Both collagen and elastin are naturally produced by our body and work to maintain the skin’s natural firmness and plumpness. Collagen, a fat, is responsible for keeping our skin looking full and healthy and, without it, ears can quickly begin to lose their shape and youthfulness.
Without a high enough collagen and elastin level, the earlobes begin to sag and elongate, leading to the droopy or “bigger” ear shape that we commonly associate with old age. Elastin allows the different layers of our skin to stretch and rebound. When it dissipates over time, the regular wear and tear that affects our ears isn’t as easily recovered from and signs of aging begin to accumulate and become noticeable. Women and men that regularly wear earrings — especially heavy ones — will notice drooping or sagging earlobes even earlier than those who don’t.
How Do Ears Begin to Wrinkle?
Just as the collagen and elastin proteins in the different layers of our skin work to keep ears from sagging, they also work to keep wrinkles from forming. Elastin, over time, begins to break down in our skin and ears begin to lose their ability to retain moisture and to stay smooth and firm. This eventually leads to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles in the ears.
With advanced age, our skin also loses some of its ability to properly retain moisture. When an insufficient amount of water is found in the skin’s cells, dryness and wrinkling begin to occur and further accelerate the appearance of aging ears. Moisture is essential in the skin as it helps to “power” the systems that keep the face looking healthy. Dryness or dehydration exacerbate natural aging and accelerate the process.
The loss of these essential proteins all lead to common signs of advanced age like thinness, loss of shape, wrinkling and overall dryness. When the skin is unable to perform its natural functions it cannot properly carry out its natural functions of revitalizing and repairing common problems and noticeable aging occurs.
